Christine O’Donnell Introduced to Concept of ‘Separation of Church and State’ for the First Time

Christine O'Donnell was a Constitutional Government fellow at the Claremont Institute, and talks about her love of the Constitution all the time, so we know she is pretty much an expert on the Constitution. But even she was stumped by a complicated and often overlooked passage from the document when it came up during a debate with her Senate opponent, Chris Coons, earlier today.

Coons said private and parochial schools are free to teach creationism but that "religious doctrine doesn't belong in our public schools."

"Where in the Constitution is the separation of church and state?" O'Donnell asked him.
When Coons responded that the First Amendment bars Congress from making laws respecting the establishment of religion, O'Donnell asked: "You're telling me that's in the First Amendment?" ....

"You actually audibly heard the crowd gasp," Widener University political scientist Wesley Leckrone said after the debate, adding that it raised questions about O'Donnell's grasp of the Constitution.

Raised questions? No. There are no questions. For someone hoping to serve in the Senate of the United States, saying "You're telling me that [the establishment clause is] in the First Amendment?" is like a prospective astronaut saying, "You're telling me we can't breathe in space?" It's like a heart surgeon walking into the operating room and asking, "You're telling me there are four chambers in the pumpy thing?" And so on.

BOSS Loop Contest 2010 - "Lima" by Daniel Harris

This video was made for the Boss Loop Contest 2010. I used the Boss RC-50 and RC-20 loop stations, as well as the Boss DD-7 and some other pedals.

Tech specs: The DD-7 is roughly in the middle of my pedal line; the RC-50 is the last and the RC-20 is second to last. I ran the stereo out from the DD-7 into an old practice amp, while the main and loop were sent to a Mesa Boogie combo (.22 Studio). Both amps were then mic'ed (one with an SM57 and the other with a mock 58) and along with the vocals (a CAD dynamic mic) were sent to an ART Tubefire 8 interface and recorded into Garageband where it was also mixed.

Guitar: Raines Bebop 7-string.

The mix: vocals are in the center, the stereo out from the DD-7 is panned toward the right and the RC-50/20/main are toward the left.

The video: shot using two Sony DVCams simultaneously--one on the ground, one on a tripod--and edited using Avid.

ANKARA, Turkey – A freelance journalist with ties to the New Hampshire Seacoast and Boston has
been arrested in what appears to be a politically-motivated act of retaliation by the Turkish government,
watch-dog groups reported Friday.

Jake Hess, 25, formerly of Hampton, was detained by Turkish police after publishing a series of articles
critical of the Turkish government's treatment of Kurdish refugees. Officially, the government alleges
Hess has collaborated with the Kuridstan Worker's Party, or PKK, a militant group outlawed by the
Turkish government.

Hess's attorney, Serkan Akbaş, said Hess "wrote several articles that angered the authorities,” adding
that the timing of the arrest “clearly shows that they got annoyed with his articles.” His latest piece

print/) for the Inter Press Service news agency - examining the displacement of civilians after Turkish
attacks - was published on August 4.

Akbas says Hess was detained without access to a lawyer for nearly 27 hours.

"Jake Hess is a legitimate journalist,” Mohamed Abdel Dayem, the Committee to Protect Journalists
Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said. "...we call on Turkish authorities to
immediately release Hess, and not hinder his reporting."

“Detaining a journalist should be an exceptional measure resulting from a thorough investigation
establishing he has committed a serious crime,” the press freedom organization Reporters
Without Borders said in a separate statement. “We call for Jake Hess's immediate release.”

“He is a legitimate journalist of extremely high integrity,” London Independent columnist Johann
Hari added on his blog. “The idea that he would have any alliance with, or sympathy for, a terror group
is utterly absurd. Yet he is currently being held at the Diyarbakir Anti-Terrorism Branch.”

“Jake Hess is one of the most passionately consistent advocates for human rights I have ever
met, period,” long-time friend and fellow WHS grad Chris Caesar said. “I hope we can have
a good laugh about these charges when he comes home, because right now, I'm mad as hell.”

Hess was raised in Hampton, NH but attended college at Suffolk University in Boston, MA and
received a graduate degree from Brown University.

According to reports, the US Embassy has declined to comment on the situation.

I have known "Chris" loosely since 1990 when we played on the Monroe-Woodbury (NY) soccer team, The Defenders. We were six. In the fall of 2002 we lived down the hall from one another; that was our freshman year of college. We have been lovers ever since. I love this man. Sometimes, when I'm listening to Of Montreal and that song, "Tim I Wish You Were Born A Girl" comes on, I change "Tim" to "Chris". Chris is my muse.

Happy Birthday, "Chris." You are beautiful, no matter what "they" say.

Amanda and Jon (formerly of Hot Box) have joined forces with Left Hand Does front-man Luke Sullivan and created Night Fruit.

Amanda plays guitar, synth, sings and giggles. Jon plays guitar, looks cooler than Amanda and yells sweet background vocals. Luke is the beat-skins with big smiles and early Phil Collins glory.

We geeked out hardcore on music (The Books, Skull Snaps--oh man, I was telling him about Skull Snaps and a little while later as he was talking with my dearest, Skull Snaps actually came on the PA and I grabbed him and we ran over to the speakers) and gear (he gave me a video tour of LCD Soundsystem's studio in NYC and the most excited parts involved the instruments--didn't really care who owned the place, it was fucking sick!). Let me take a step back to how this all came together. In November I played a show with The Books at the Rose Art Museum. After sound check, Nick (he plays guitar and sings) and I got to talking music (obvs). He said I should check out a band called, Lymbyc Systym. So I did. And I really, really liked it. A lot. Cool. Moving on. Got this tour planned for March en route to SXSW and my dear friend Laura arranged her plans (she was out in NYC visiting from SF) to come to the show on her friend's bday. I get a call from Laura saying that not only is she coming, but she's bringing a special surprise. I honestly couldn't think of what it might be. I mean, Laura's fucking crazy. When we were talking about a week before the show, she could resist and just blurted out, "I'm bringing the drummer from Lymbyc Systym!" I was like, "WTF? How do you know him?" Turns out Mike was sitting in with another band when they came to Brandeis while Laura was a student and they hit it off (it's easy with Laura, she's a sweetheart, albeit crazy, but a sweetheart nonetheless). This got me super pumped, as one would imagine. Anyway, Mike saw my set and then, as I said, we geeked out on music and gear. We got to talking about touring and such and he invited me to open for them at the Middle East Upstairs. It was all very exciting. And what truly made the evening even more special was one of my favourite Boston acts and fellow loop and pedal geek, Animal Hospital, whom I've been wanting to play a show with since I first saw him. It was a fucking awesome night. Above is a little something I put together using two pictures I took during Lymbyc's set and photoshop.

Yesterday was a day off in that we didn't have a show last night which is good because we drove for nearly eight hours from Philly to Charlottesville. It was only supposed to take us four to four and a half hours but traffic and weather dealt otherwise. We found a random bar off 95 while still in PA early on yesterday that let me poo. We ended up hanging out there for about an hour waiting for the traffic to mellow out a bit. Here are some sweet shots from said bar:

This inspired much farting and a massive poo this morning. My insides feel very clean now.

But wait!

First show of the tour was on the 10th at Trash Bar in Brookyln with some very, very shitty bands. Sorry to be a dick but it's just the truth. The sound guy was a dick, too. But some really good friends came out and I got to meet and geek out with Mike, the drummer from Lymbic System (gear nerds united).

The 11th we played at Khyber in Philly and though there were some atrocious grounding issues, the show was a blast and the sound guy was super nice. Some old friends came out including one I hadn't seen in literally eight years!! Stayed with Guapo and he made a great breakfast...

so i went to that russian market today (bazaar on cambridge) to finally go grocery shopping and it was a complete disaster.

a) EVERYONE there--literally everyone except me--was speaking russian.

b) the deli counter signs? russian.

c) the vegetables? russian.

d) they did have a beer i was happy to find, though.

i picked up what i could understand--dark bread, tropicana oj, dried kiwis (never had them before but they looked interesting), that beer ('lobster lovers'), some ginger and some killer tomatoes. then i gave up and with much chagrin went to stop and shop (and without my headphones which made it even that challenging).

and thus was my prime adventure today. that and going to the at&t store to look into possibly getting an iphone.

i've been traveling for the past 2.5 weeks. it's nice to be back. it's fucking cold here. but it's ok. it's 8:26am on a Saturday, 9 January 2010 and i'm at Allston Cafe drinking coffee, finishing breakfast, harvesting a big poop. it's wonderful. this is my favourite haunt around these parts. here and publick house. today i'm going to record demos of two new songs i've been working on. one is called TEETH. the other doesn't have a name just yet. i'm jonesin to play them with most ghosts. me hopes they like. fuck structure farting outloud don't hold back talk of ginsberg and friends, a gaggle of beat bong gangsters grow grabbing golden gates their syllabic strides stretch STUCK social sense and preview IT for all. he has IT. taste IT. IT is coming out of my ears!!!!!!!!!!!!! what are we listening to i'm sitting in alpaca llama cardigan people. pictures to come don't want to go home alone and sit in the empty house. need to clean organize before recrodding, we'll see which comes first. what is my name again? in four hours i can play drums again but not until. that's just fucked. oh man. this poo is growing growing columbian vs turkish. we'll see who wins. fair fightz. muslim ladies crossing the street make me feel at home. wish the 3d was here. needz 3d. moe hand glow. no picture for you just yet. he was trying to make it come out all poo like. pooooosh. pooooooooooooooosh. i escaped for a moment.

An excerpt from last night's dream dream dream.

In my head, I'm listening to Left Hand Does with Tears for Fears. They're performing "Songs from the Big Chair" in its entirety and it's fucking great. In my dream last night, two old friends were teaching some alternative Hebrew school/Jew-camp class. They were screening a new Mario Bros. game. But the film that accompanied the game. It was 64bit. There was a point where we were cooking, but that's about all I can remember from that scene. I tried to rip the game's movie onto my iPod but kinda fucked up the lesson. They forgave me with a stern reprimand and put the movie back on. Erika had two laptops--both MacBookPros and showed off the new feature: hands free file placement and motion. She held her hands above one computer as she would conduct an orchestra using a theromin and virtually dragged files to the other computer and pressed play all without touching either machine. Left Hand Does then went on to perform some songs for the kids. They closed with a cover featuring Jean, Ryan and Josh all on drums; Jean also doubled up on keys. Luke played guitar and everyone sang. Thinking about it now while typing, I want to say it was a Doobie Bros. song (probably "Black Water") but it definitely wasn't in the dream. I don't remember what it was. During their short set I explained to someone that many of their (LHD) songs are bred from dreams. Ironically, I didn't wake up to pen any of the dreamed LHD songs because I forgot that I was dreaming. After the last song, Luke asked how it sounded and I said "wonderful." He felt it was a bit a sloppy but that's how the original sounds--a tight sloppy, like Pavement or Jimmy Page or John McLaughlin. "Alright, cool."

I realize that I don't need coffees bigger than a small. Too much at once ruins the unique tastes and relationship with the experience of being caffeinated we (the coffee and I) share.

Klessa - Live at Savant Project in Boston

Klessa is the latest great musical endeavor headed up by Matt Gordon (L'hiver, Laser Awesome, Red Sled Choir) coming out of New Paltz, NY. If there is anything New Paltz, NY should be known for is their incredible DIY music community. For nearly three years, Matt Gordon and fellow L'hiver/Laser Awesome alumnus (plus engineer for the debut Klessa album, "Aloha Demons" and currently touring in the band) Matt Ross, lived at the notorious 266 house in New Paltz, aka, The Rug Room. The Rug Room was host to almost weekly performances and other musical community gatherings featuring artists local, regional and even national (from previously mentioned groups to Kimya Dawson). Together with Cheryl (also of L'hiver), Kate Larson and Simon Thrasher (of Holy Haunted Head), Klessa emit shear beauty. I woke up 'round 4-4:30am to go to the bathroom and noticed this weird, intense pain emanating from my mustache region. At first I thought it was a zit or an ingrown hair but the pain was way too intense and my upper-lip was beginning to swell...

That happened two weeks ago almost to the day. Actually, it happened literally--literally--24hrs shy of a perfect two week phrase; and this lovely early morn is A prime.

WHAT THE FUCK!?

Before going to sleep tonight, whilst weaving waxy wire through my grill, I felt what reasonably could have been two new pimpletons growing--one in the realm of my stache and one just below my flava-sava (pronounced: flay-vuh say-vuh). Again, thinking nothing of these minor bumps in the road of my face than previously stated assertions and further validation why my beard will soon reappear, I went to sleep...

...only to wake-up at 4:30am to go to the bathroom with intense pain emanating from my mustache region and just below-and-right and my fucking flava-sava--ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? Did we not just go through this two weeks ago? Was I not shafted from the health-center at my work place because I'm not a student and told to walk to the ER 3/4-of-a-mile-away? Did I not already look like Fat Lip, get two intense shots--one in each arm--have my friend Olganize [sic] a ride home for me because I was so knocked-out from the shots that I could barely say my name without falling asleep (and I slept in my former supervisor's old office for an hour before getting the ride), have to take a day-off because the medications seriously drained the fuck out me, and was forced to hold-off on calling this cute girl I had met a few days before because of said aesthetic wonders? Holy crap! I can't fall back asleep, I'm freaking out; I can't believe I'm still sitting on my bed--WAIT!

--have I even mentioned that it's been assumed that the initial ailment was a spider bite? Did I mention that I also happen to be (more than) notably terrified of said creature? Not only did this happen once before, but it was two fucking weeks ago and now I have TWO of these fuckers. Shit man, do I need a new mattress? Blanket? Pillows? What do I do?

And this time, it didn't happened when I was sleeping. But when did it happen? Are these not spider bites? What are they? The pain is exactly the same, my mustache-lip is beginning to swell, I can feel two small bumps. I took two Benadryl. Shit man, I might just head over to the ER and see if'n they can't give me a shot...but I have two shows this week and I need my arms as much as possible--lugging gear, playing...Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. Tomorrow (later today, in 12 hours), I have a huge event that I've been planning for weeks. I can't miss that. Should I just go back to sleep and go to the doctor when I wake-up? Crap. I'm losing steam. Benadryl is finally kicking in. Think I'll just go back to sleep, see what my face looks like in a few hours (though I can feel my top lip gaining real-estate, slowly spilling over its bottom-bunk mate, my lower lip).

I am writing to share with you all very, very exciting news.

I have been asked to open for the internationally renown music duo, The Books, on Thursday, November 19th at 8:30pm.

The Books began performing in 1999 and have since released four wonderful albums; all of which have had great impact on my perception of what music and art can be.

What makes this performance particularly special is that it will be taking place in the Rose Art Museum and is open exclusively to the Brandeis community (sorry non-Deisians).

To date, this is my most important performance and I am deeply grateful and excited. (Let's be honest, I'm flipping out! The Books are one of my favourite groups of all time!)

Again, I truly hope you are able to join me and The Books in celebrating an evening of art and music in the beautiful Rose Art Museum.

PIM had played on the WMUC (UMD-College Park's radio station) show, Third Rail, which Michael and Miles hosted.

After the show, Michael called me up and said that I need to check this band out. So I did. And I fell in love immediately. I sent Andrew (keys/vocals) a myspace message explaining how I came to their music. Andrew wrote back and thus our pen-palship began.

For a few months we pen-pal'ed it up, mostly about music. My mind was blown--I fell in love with new music and struck up a nice online friendship with the melodic magician.

As summer rolled around, both our bands were scheduled to play at the Make Music New York/Williamsburg festival. We tried to meet up, but our sets were at the same time; azoi.

A few weeks later, I was on a solo tour with some friends (Boston, NY, Philly, DC) and called Andrew up to see if while we were passing through Philly, we couldn't grab a drink. Finally, our paths were able to coincide and Andrew, his special lady friend Anne, my friends and I went out for a mid-afternoon beer (or two...) at one of his haunts.

Initially, I was beside myself with myself. I was so giddy, it was really difficult for me to get out a full sentence. After a little bit, we just stuck to the music/tour talk and then I mellowed out. He and Anne were incredibly sweet and warm people and it was the highlight not only of the tour, but of my summer. (Did I mention Anne treated us all to the beer? See, special lady friend indeed!)

Andrew and I stayed in touch throughout the summer and when they came to Boston, I ran to the box office to get my tickets. The night of the show, I walked into the Middle East Upstairs to big hugs.
